13 Million Children In India Obese In 2022 Up From Million In 1990 Says Lancet Study

So many crores of children in India are victims of obesity and malnutrition. According to a global data published in The Lancet Journal, obesity among children is increasing rapidly in India. In the year 2022, the weight of about 12.5 million children between the age of five to 19 years is increasing rapidly. Whereas in 1990 this figure was 0.4 million. Of the 12.5 million, 7.3 million were boys and 5.2 million were girls. The total number of children, adolescents and adults suffering from obesity worldwide has exceeded one billion.

These trends, combined with the declining prevalence of underweight people since the 1990s, make obesity the most common form of undernutrition in most countries, the researchers said. Obesity and underweight both are forms of malnutrition and are harmful to people’s health in many ways. The latest study provides a highly detailed picture of global trends in both forms of malnutrition over the past 33 years.

Analysis by the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RISC) – a global network of scientists – and the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that among the world’s children and adolescents, obesity rates were to quadruple in 2022. In 1990, senior author Professor Majid Ezzati, of Imperial College London in the UK, said, “It is very worrying that the obesity epidemic that was evident among adults in much of the world in 1990 is now also visible among school-age children and adolescents.” Billions of people are still affected by malnutrition, especially in some of the poorest parts of the world. To successfully tackle both forms of malnutrition, it is vital that we significantly improve the availability and affordability of healthy, nutritious foods.

Global obesity rates have more than doubled among women and nearly tripled among men. Overall, 159 million children and adolescents and 879 million adults were living with obesity in 2022, according to the study.

In India, adult obesity rates are projected to increase from 1.2 percent in 1990 to 9.8 percent in 2022 for women and from 0.5 percent to 5.4 percent for men. Nearly 44 million women and 26 million men were obese in 2022. Between 1990 and 2022, the proportion of children and adolescents affected by underweight in the world will fall by almost a fifth among girls and by more than a third among boys. During the same period, the proportion of the world’s adults affected by underweight increased to more than half.

Obesity rates for girls are expected to rise from 0.1 percent in 1990 to 3.1 percent in 2022, and for boys from 0.1 percent to 3.9 percent in 2022. Researchers representing more than 190 countries looked at 220 million people aged five and older. Analyzed weight and height measurements of more than 100,000 people (63 million people aged five to 19 and 158 million people aged 20 or older).

More than 1,500 researchers contributed to the study, which looked at body mass index (BMI) to understand how obesity and underweight have changed around the world from 1990 to 2022.

The study found that from 1990 to 2022, global obesity rates have more than quadrupled in girls and boys, with the increase seen in almost all countries. The researchers said the proportion of girls who were underweight fell from 10.3 percent in 1990 to 8.2 percent in 2022, and for boys it fell from 16.7 percent to 10.8 percent. He said the decline in underweight rates among girls was seen in 44 countries, while among boys the decline was seen in 80 countries.
