On Thursday, Lanka police registered a case against the accused for attempting to burn Manu Smriti in BHU campus, assaulting security personnel and spreading religious frenzy. The 13 students arrested in the case were produced in the court, from where they were sent to jail in judicial custody. 10 students were arrested earlier. Three girl students were arrested later. The Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) team has also reached Lanka police station to interrogate the accused. The ATS team is investigating the connections of the accused students with urban Naxalites.

Chief Proctor of BHU Prof. SP Singh had given a complaint to the Lanka police station on Wednesday. He told the police that the ruckus was being created by the students as part of a pre-planned plan with the aim of burning Manu Smriti Granth at the Arts Faculty intersection in the campus and spreading religious frenzy. The Proctorial Board team was making efforts to calm everyone down and remove them from the spot. On this the students beat up the security personnel. Created obstruction in government work by vandalizing the premises. Two female security personnel suffered serious injuries in the fight.

In this regard, Lanka police station incharge Shivakant Mishra said that 13 students were arrested by the staff of BHU’s Chief Proctor Office. All of them were handed over to the police. A case was registered against all of them. Mukesh Kumar, Sandeep Jaiswar, Amar Sharma and Laxman Kumar of BA Hons, Faculty of Arts, BHU, Arvind Pal of MA Hindi, Anupam Kumar, research student of Philosophy, students Avinash, Arvind, Shubham Kumar and Adarsh, Ipsita of MSc (Psychology). Aggarwal, Siddi Tiwari of MA (Sociology) and Katyayani of BA Honors from the Faculty of Arts were sent to jail.

ATS officers said that the activities of some of the arrested students were already suspicious. The NIA team has already interrogated a student. Therefore, the students were interrogated as to what was their motive behind the act they committed.
