There have been many incidents of trees being removed from one place and planted at another place. But this time scientists have made a unique effort. He has tried to revive a tree whose species is believed to be 145 million years old and was considered extinct in 1994 itself. Now scientists have decided to do the unique work of reviving this “living fossil”, but where they will revive the plant named Wollemi Pines is still a secret.
This ancient conifer was discovered by hikers in Australia’s Blue Mountains in 1994. Today 60 species of this tree are alive in Wollemi National Park. But after all efforts, a pathogen named Phytophthora cinnamomi is being held responsible for gradually destroying their health.
Not only this, it is also being considered a threat due to the fire in the forests of New South Wales, Australia. The specialty of this tree is that it is 145 million years old and there has been no change in it since then. Fossils from the Cretaceous period (145 to 66 million years old) confirm this fact.

After this tree was rediscovered, it has been grown in botanical gardens and many private areas. Now Australian government scientists and conservationists want to grow it again. According to Live Science, these three sites of Wollemi National Park are said to be very safe from forest fires and other accidents.
At present, infection with Phytophthora species has not been found at these places. Earlier attempts to grow them have been made in 2012, 2019 and 2021. But out of 400 saplings planted in 2019, only 58 could survive in 2023. In 2021, an attempt was made to plant about 502 trees but 80 percent of them were destroyed in landslides caused by heavy rains.
These plants will take decades to flourish. Because they grow only by 1.02 cm every year. Due to this slow pace of growth, scientists say that it may not take centuries for them to flourish, but it will definitely take decades. Still, scientists are not in a position to guarantee their long-term survival.
