A very rare case has come to light in Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi. A 15-year-old girl who came here for treatment had three rare neurological diseases simultaneously. The symptoms of these diseases were so strange that even doctors were surprised to see them once. However, the doctors did not give up and then something happened which can be called nothing less than a miracle.
According to the health experts of Indraprastha Apollo, this was the first time that a 15 year old patient had three rare diseases namely Bickerstaff’s Brainstem Encephalitis, Miller Fisher Syndrome and Axonal Neuropathy. However, expert doctors not only identified these diseases by doing diagnostic tests through different methods but also gave life to the patient by giving timely treatment.

According to the information given by Apollo, some time ago a 15-year-old patient came to the hospital. She had innumerable symptoms like imbalance, slipping of slippers, difficulty in speaking, double vision, difficulty in swallowing and impaired consciousness. While admitted in the hospital, the patient’s condition deteriorated rapidly and serious symptoms like facial deviation, drooling and difficulty in closing the right eye also started appearing.
The examination of the patient started under the supervision of Dr. PN Renzen, Senior Consultant, Department of Neurology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital. Tests such as MRI and nerve conduction studies revealed that the patient had Bickerstaff’s brainstem encephalitis, Miller Fisher syndrome and axonal neuropathy, which are rare diseases.
Doctors said that Bickerstaff’s brainstem encephalitis (BBE) is a rare, autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) is a rare disorder that causes the patient’s immune system to attack the nerves, usually starting in your face. Additionally, axonal neuropathy is a condition that can affect the central and peripheral nervous system. All these three diseases were found in one patient, which shows how much and what kind of problems he might have faced before admission.
In the hospital, the patient was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) for about five days. The ENT surgeon also performed a tracheostomy procedure. After a comprehensive course of treatment and careful management, the patient showed significant improvement in his condition and has now been discharged from the hospital.
Regarding this, Dr. PN Renjen said, ‘This case is one of the management of rare and complex neurological conditions. Through thorough clinical evaluation with advanced diagnostic tools, we can not only diagnose the patient’s problems but also timely identify and treat diseases like Bickerstaff encephalitis, Miller Fisher syndrome and axonal neuropathies. With the expertise of our multidisciplinary team, the patient received immediate relief with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). This case reflects our unwavering commitment at Apollo Hospitals to provide exceptional care and use our expertise to achieve positive outcomes even in the face of challenging medical complications.’
