Mohan Dhakale/Burhanpur: Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh is known for its strange and unique stories, and Sameer Sheikh, a resident of Shahpur area here, has set a unique example of animal love by celebrating his dog’s birthday in a grand manner. In this birthday celebration which is going viral on social media, a crowd of more than 200 people gathered, a procession was taken out in the village with drums and cards and cake was cut at eight different places.
How did you get ‘Kaalu’ and why did you celebrate your birthday?
Sameer Sheikh got his beloved dog ‘Kalu’ as a gift. A dhaba owner near Dariyapur gifted Sameer an injured dog, one of whose legs was broken. After getting treatment from a private doctor, Sameer adopted him into his family like a child. A year later, to make his first birthday special, Sameer invited the villagers and took out a procession of Kalu with drums and musical instruments throughout the village.
Kalu was decorated with a colorful cap and a garland of flowers on the occasion, and cakes were cut for him at various intersections. Sameer says that it was not just a ceremony, but a display of the love he had for Kalu.

For Sameer, dogs are not just pets but part of his family. This is not the first time that Sameer has shown such love towards an animal. Even before this, while working at a dhaba in Raver, Sameer had fostered a dog ‘Bhuru’, whose birthday was celebrated and upon his death he was also cremated as per Hindu rituals.
Sameer says that after Bhuru, he reared another dog in Shahpur, but it went missing. This time his relationship with Kalu, who got him as a gift, has become even deeper.

Sameer Shaikh works as a cook at a dhaba by profession, but even with his limited resources, he leaves no stone unturned in taking care of his pets. Sameer spent around Rs 7000 on Kalu’s birthday celebration. He says that he tries to ensure that along with his two children, his pets also get full love and care. According to him, “Whatever animals come and live with me, I raise them like my children.”
