No official statement has been issued by the jail administration on this matter, but sources say that medical screening of prisoners is done from time to time in Tihar Jail. The new Jail Director General Satish Golcha who came to Tihar had the prisoners medically examined in the months of May-June. During this period, about three thousand prisoners refused to undergo medical tests.

According to the report, out of the prisoners who were medically examined, 125 prisoners were found HIV positive. Sources say that these prisoners did not get AIDS while in jail, rather when these prisoners came to jail from outside, their medical test was done, even then the prisoners were HIV positive. Jail sources said that about two hundred prisoners have skin related diseases. Apart from this, many prisoners have TB.

According to sources, the Protective Survey Department of Tihar Jail, in collaboration with AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital, also conducted cervical cancer tests for female prisoners, but this disease was not detected in any female prisoner.
