So much gold has been extracted from this mine located about 90 km from Bengaluru that you cannot even imagine. The full form of KGF is also ‘Kolar Gold Fields’. How was this mine discovered?
Many things are said about the discovery of this mine. For example, Bridget White writes in her book Kolar Gold Field Down Memory Lane that this mine was used to extract gold even during the Gupta period. Whereas, Venkatswami’s book ‘Kolar Gold Mines’ published by the Geological Survey of India writes that this mine was also used by the Indus Valley Civilization.
When did its name come into writing?
The year was 1875. A British soldier named Michael Lavallee was working in Bangalore. He came to know that gold was being discovered at a distance of some 90 kilometers from here. He felt that this was a great opportunity to make money. He sought permission from the Mysore government for a gold mine in Kolar. After a lot of hard work, he got the permission.
However, he did not dig there himself, but after a year transferred his license to someone else. After this, some people invested 5 thousand pounds in it and named it ‘Kolar Concessionaire’. Later Chennai and Origam Company invested 10 thousand pounds in it and then Mysore Mines Company and Nandi Durga also invested in it. After this, gold mining started happening here in a big way.
