Balraj Sahni made his Bollywood debut with the 1946 film ‘Insaaf’. He gained fame with ‘Dharti Ke Lal’. After this, he worked in films like ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, ‘Neel Kamal’, ‘Do Raaste’, ‘Ek Phool Do Mali’, ‘Chhoti Bahan’, ‘Kabuliwala’, ‘Waqt’ and ‘Garam Hawa’. But before coming into films, he was a part of the freedom struggle.
Balraj has worked with Mahatma Gandhi
According to DNA, Balraj became a part of the communist movement in the early 1940s. But before that he worked with Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi advised Balraj to go to London and join BBC Hindi, which the actor accepted. Later he returned to India and tried his hand at acting.
Actor jailed for revolutionary thinking
Balraj was a member of the Indian Progressive Theatre Association in 1946 and during this time he had to go to jail for his revolutionary thinking. The special thing is that Balraj Sahni worked in films even while he was in jail. He used to return to jail after completing the shooting of his film.
Wife and daughter died suddenly
Balraj Sahni’s wife Damyanti Sahni was also an actress. But she died during the shooting of a film in 1947. His daughter Shabnam Sahni also died suddenly at her in-laws’ house.
