The boy was vaping, had trouble breathing, his condition worsened after treatment, he was taken to the hospital, his life was in danger

A schoolboy’s health suddenly deteriorated and then kept getting worse, while all this started with vaping. Initially, he had trouble breathing due to vaping, so he got medical treatment from the hospital, but within a few days he started coughing up blood and when he became more weak, when he was thoroughly examined, the doctors found that he had a problem called ‘pneumothorax’. After recovering completely, he has given up vaping.

Nathan Chesworth, 16, from Manchester, UK, was studying for his GCSEs when he started having trouble breathing and a bad cough. After several visits to the general practitioner, or GP, the boy was prescribed antibiotics for a chest infection, but within a few days of taking them, he started coughing up blood. Over the next few days, he became lethargic, unable to get out of bed and also lost a lot of weight.

His mother Rebecca Chesworth said: “He looked horrible, he wasn’t eating or drinking.” The night before he was due to go back to school, the keen cricketer’s lung collapsed while climbing stairs, leaving him unable to breathe. Rebecca, 44, who works as a ward clerk, immediately phoned an out-of-hours GP and took him straight to A&E at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan.

After carrying out an X-ray, doctors discovered he had pneumothorax, a condition where air becomes trapped in the space between the lungs and the chest wall, which can lead to a collapsed lung. A tube was inserted to drain the fluid from the lung, after which Nathan remained in the children’s ward for four days. A short time later, the teenager went back to hospital as his other lung had collapsed and from here he was transferred to Wythenshawe Hospital, where he told his mother he had been vaping.

Rebecca said her son admitted he would buy 300 rupees worth of ‘Tutti-Fruitti’ flavoured vapes after school, often while wearing his school uniform. Rebecca claims Nathan has stopped vaping since his stay in the hospital.
