What do the Vedas and Puranas say about Hartalika teej

Haritalika Teej 2024: Many people also call it Hartalika/Hartalika Vrat in their own languages but in the scriptures this festival is called Haritalika or Har-Kali Vrat. In the fast of Mata Parvati, emotions are more important than language, so celebrate this festival with a calm mind. Let us know what the scriptures say about this festival.

According to Narada Purana Purva Bhag Chapter No. 112, on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Bhadrapad, a married woman should observe ‘Hartalika Vrat’ by worshipping with devotion by offering water and water etc. in a proper manner. She should keep dishes with dakshina in a gold, silver, copper, bamboo or clay vessel and donate it along with fruits and clothes. The woman who observes this fast enjoys delicious food and becomes the companion of Goddess Gauri by the effect of this fast.

According to Bhavishya Purana Uttar Parva Chapter 20, on this day Bhagwati Gauri was born and then lived on the left side of Lord Shiva. From this day onwards Gauri ji became famous by the name Harkali (‘Har’ or Mahadev and ‘Kali’ is a form of mother).

On the third day of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Bhadrapad, collect all kinds of new grains and place the idol of Bhagwati Harkali made of sprouted green grass on them and worship the Goddess with fragrance, flowers, incense, lamps, offerings of modaks etc. and various offerings. Keep a vigil at night by celebrating with songs and dances etc. and salute Goddess Harkali with this mantra-
Harkarmasmutpanne harkaaye harpriya. Mother Trahishasya Murtisthe Pranatosmi Namo Namah.

(Bhavishya Purana Uttarparva 20.20)
Meaning–”O Shankarpriya, born from the action of Lord Shankar! You reside in the body of Lord Shankar, you reside in the idol of Lord Shankar, I am in your refuge, please protect me. I salute you again and again.”

After worshipping the Goddess in this manner, in the morning, the well-born women should take the idol to a holy water body while singing and dancing with great fervour and immerse it while reciting this mantra.
“Architasi Maya Bhaktya Gachch Devi Suralayam. Harkale Shiva Gauri Punaragamanay Cha ॥”

(Bhavisya Purana Uttarparva 2022) Meaning– “O Harkali Devi! I have worshipped you with devotion, O Gauri! You should depart for Devlok at this time to return again.” Whoever does this every year, gets health, longevity, good fortune, wealth, strength, prosperity etc.
