Story of Shani Dev and Ganesh Ji (Shani Dev-Ganesh Ji Katha)

There are many stories related to Shani Dev and Ganesh Ji in Hinduism. According to Brahmavaivarta Purana, when Maa Parvati gave birth to Lord Ganesh, a Ganesh Utsav was organized in Shivlok to celebrate the birth of Lord Shankar and Mata Gauri’s son Ganesh. In this festival, all the gods and goddesses reached Kailash to bless the child Ganesh. Shani Dev also participated in this festival. But he did not bless the child Ganesh. Rather, he was standing with his head bowed down. When Mother Parvati saw that Shani Dev was not even looking at her child, she was very surprised.

When Maa Parvati asked Shani Dev the reason for not looking at Ganesh, Shani Dev told her that his sight can harm the child i.e. Ganesh ji. Therefore, it would not be appropriate for Shani Dev to look at Ganesh ji. Maa Parvati did not know about the curse of Shani Dev’s retrograde sight. Then Shani Dev told Maa Parvati about his curse.

Mata Parvati told Shani Dev that nothing bad will happen if he looks at him. Mata Parvati requested Shani Dev to look at Ganesh, so that Mata Parvati does not get angry, he looked at the child Ganesh. But as soon as Shani Dev looked at him, the child Ganesh’s head got separated from the body and flew into the sky. Seeing this, Mata Parvati fainted.
