Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday (September 14, 2024) arrested former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandeep Ghosh in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. The police have also arrested Abhijit Mandal along with him. Abhijit is the SHO of Tala police station. Sandeep Ghosh was already in the custody of the CBI. According to a report by news agency PTI, Ghosh is already in judicial custody of the agency on charges of corruption during his tenure at RG Kar Hospital. Apart from the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also investigating money laundering charges against him. Apart from this, the investigating agency has shared the details of the raids conducted so far in the case.
What are the charges against Sandip Ghosh?
The CBI on Saturday leveled several charges against Sandip Ghosh. “He was arrested for his alleged role in misleading the investigation and destroying evidence by not declaring the victim’s death immediately and by delaying the filing of an FIR in a significant manner,” sources in the investigating agency told news agency PTI. The agency has applied to a local court to take Ghosh on remand to probe the rape and murder charges. He was arrested on September 2 in a case related to financial irregularities during his tenure as principal at the hospital.
There should be a delay of at least 14 hours in filing an FIR- CJI Chandrachud
Taking suo motu cognizance of the matter, on September 9, the Supreme Court pointed to the discrepancy between the time of registration of the general diary (GD) and the FIR. CJI DY Chandrachud said, “It is very clear that there was a delay of at least 14 hours in filing the FIR.”
Police officer arrested for delaying filing FIR
Meanwhile, Tala police station in-charge officer Abhijit Mandal was arrested after he failed to answer the agency’s questions satisfactorily. He was arrested on charges of tampering with evidence and delaying filing an FIR after receiving information about the crime. Since, the hospital falls under the jurisdiction of Tala police station.

A CBI official said, “The policeman has been questioned eight times before and each time he has given different statements. He has been arrested and will be produced in court tomorrow. Abhijit Mandal was questioned for several hours on Saturday before his arrest.
