Lakheshwar Yadav/Janjgir Champa. About two dozen farmers of Kotgarh village of Janjgir Champa district are cultivating water chestnut on a large scale in ponds. With changing times, the field of agriculture has also changed. Earlier farmers traditionally used to cultivate only a few crops, but now their field of work has increased.

Rajaram Dhiwar, a farmer of Kotgarh village of Akaltara block in Janjgir district, told Local 18 that he is becoming financially strong by cultivating water chestnut. Also, 15-20 farmers of the village are growing water chestnut on a large scale in ponds, which is giving them good income. Rajaram Dhiwar told that earlier he used to cultivate paddy, but he was not able to earn much profit, there was a lot of cost in labour. Later, he thought of cultivating water chestnut which would give more profit.

Gets good price in the market
Rajaram started water chestnut farming in one acre pond seven years ago in 2018, in which he earned good income, after which he never looked back, he has been cultivating water chestnut since then till date. His son has always been supporting him in water chestnut farming. Rajaram is getting good income from water chestnut farming. Also, like other crops, it also requires care and cleaning, for this, people of the village are employed so that they can also get employment.
In the local markets of Janjgir, Akaltara and Balouda, water chestnut is being sold at Rs. 50 to 60 per kg, due to which Rajaram’s income is increasing, he himself is becoming self-sufficient, and at the same time, by employing people of the village, he is also making their families happy.
