Muhammad Yunus at UNGA: There has been a massive demonstration outside the United Nations (UN) headquarters against Mohammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh. On Friday (September 27, 2024), protesters reached outside the UN Headquarters in New York and started shouting slogans against them in anger. During this period, the protesters not only called him a terrorist but also called him a murderer of minorities (in the context of Hindus in Bangladesh). He said that Mohammad Yunus is a murderer of Hindus. In such a situation, he should return and step down from the post immediately. Outside the UN headquarters, people also raised slogans like ‘Terrorist, minority killer, Hindu killer Yunus, go back, step down’.

This sloganeering against Mohammad Yunus took place in the context of target killing of Hindus after the coup in Bangladesh. Speaking to news agency ANI, a person among the protesters said, “We are here against a person who is not elected and who is illegally representing the constitutionally governed country of Bangladesh. He (Yunus Has no right to speak on behalf of 170 million people of Bangladesh. 50 years ago, Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman addressed the world in Bengali and today Dr. Yunus gave his lecture in English.”

What was said in the United Nations General Assembly session?

Mohammad Yunus, chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, said on Friday (27 September) at the UN General Assembly session, ‘We need to provide adequate security to the Rohingyas and give them an opportunity to return to their homeland with rights. Amidst the constantly changing situation in Myanmar, we are fully prepared to work with the international communities to create a safe environment for the Rohingyas in our country.

‘People speak freely’

Mohammad Yunus said, ‘We are committed to maintaining and protecting the fundamental rights of the people. Our aim is that the people of Bangladesh should be able to speak freely, express their views, gather anywhere without any fear, vote and elect the people of their choice. We are also committed to the independence of the judiciary and freedom of the media. Our goals also include correcting the mistakes of the past. We are also fully committed to a strong economy.
