In the Tharu tribe, when someone gets married, the newlywed bride cooks food for the first time in the kitchen of her in-laws’ house. This ritual is performed in many places, but in the Tharu tribe, when a new bride goes to her in-laws’ house after getting married and cooks something for the first time, she gives it to her husband to eat in a very strange way. Normally people might get angry if this is done, but here this ritual is performed happily. In fact, The bride puts food in the plate and gives it to her husband by moving it not with her hands but with her feet. The groom also performs this ritual with love. When the bride slides the plate from her foot and gives it to the husband, the groom first puts it on his head. Eats food only after that. This ritual is called ‘Apna Paraya’. In the Tharu community, the ritual performed after marriage is called ‘Chala’.

Most of the people of Tharu tribe live in Champaran (Bihar), Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar (Uttarakhand), Lakhimpur Kheri (Uttar Pradesh). Apart from this, people of this tribe constitute 6-7 percent of the total population of Nepal. This tribe also lives in many villages of Kumaon region in Uttarakhand. These people live in the areas of forests, mountains and rivers. The culture and rituals for which this tribe is known are still visible in their lifestyle. It is said that the word ‘Tharu’ originated from the people living in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan.
