During this time, he fell in love with Geeta Bali and she became his first wife. An interesting incident happened at the time of marriage that Shammi Kapoor had applied lipstick instead of vermillion on the request of Geeta Bali.
Geeta Bali had denied many times
The audience was very fond of the pairing of Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali. Both of them looked very good together on screen. Both of them came close to each other for the first time during Miss Coca Cola in 1955. Shammi Kapoor soon realized that he was in love with Geeta Bali. During this period, Shammi Kapoor proposed Geeta Bali several times but she refused. However, finally on 23 August 1955, when Shammi proposed at Juhu Hotel, this time Geeta Bali agreed to the marriage. Shammi Kapoor had once told that after four months of anger, tears and many attempts, Geeta accepted his proposal that day.
In an interview given to The Quint, Shammi Kapoor had said – I thought that once again I will propose to Geeta, she will smile and shake her head no, but this time it did not happen. Geeta Bali immediately said – Okay Shammi, let’s get married but the marriage should happen immediately. Soon after, Shammi got married in the temple in the presence of friends like Johnny Walker and producer Hari Walia.
Both had reached the temple after heavy rain. During this, Geeta Bali was wearing salwar kameez while Shammi Kapoor was wearing kurta-pajama. Pandit ji had performed all the rituals here. When it was time to fill the vermillion in the maang, Geeta Bali took out lipstick from her purse and gave it to Shammi. So Shammi filled lipstick on Geeta’s demand.
