When Dilip Kumar Broke His Promise: Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu were one of the cutest couples of Bollywood. There was an age difference of 22 years between this couple but their love was equally strong. Both were so deeply in love with each other that it was always visible in their chemistry. Saira Banu left acting after marriage with Dilip Kumar. However, there came a time in the life of this couple when they had to face many difficulties. In his autobiography The Substance and the Shadow, Dilip Kumar has confirmed that after 16 years of marriage with Saira Banu, he was married to Asma Rehman for some time.
He revealed in his book that Saira had come to know about the marriage from news reports and she was sad. After all, Dilip – in his own words – had promised never to marry again when he married Saira.

Dilip Kumar revealed in his book- ‘In 1982, when the news spread that I had married Asma and Saira read the sensational ‘revelation’ in a tabloid, it was very painful for me to console her because she was angry at me. She trusted me and loved me unconditionally. I was not at home when Saira read this news and truth be told neither she nor her mother believed it because they had full faith in me and at the time of Nikah with Saira I had honestly promised That the question of second marriage does not arise and there should be no talk about it.

Dilip Kumar further wrote – I can never forget or forgive myself for the hurt I caused to Saira and for breaking her unwavering trust in me. It is important to say that even in a situation when a self-respecting woman can do nothing but hate the man who humiliated her, my wife Saira supported me when I accepted my grave mistake and went through the proper legal procedures. Asked me to give him some time to correct that mistake and restore our marriage of sixteen years.
Despite all these difficulties, Saira Banu always stood by Dilip Kumar. Dilip Kumar left this world saying goodbye to him on 7th July 2021.
