Govatsa Dwadashi 2024: Kartik month is considered very sacred. Every day of this month, beloved of Lord Vishnu, is celebrated as a festival. One of these festivals is Govatsa Dwadashi, which is also mentioned in Bhavishya Purana.
According to Bhavishya Purana Uttarparva chapter number 69, once Maharaj Yudhishthir became sad and said to Lord Krishna, “Lord! Eighteen Akshauhini armies have been destroyed for the attainment of my kingdom, this sin has generated a lot of hatred in my mind. Brahmins in it O Jagatpati, please describe some religion in my heart due to the death of Bhishma, Drona, Karna, Duryodhana etc. .
Lord Shri Krishna said- “The fast named Govatsa Dwadashi is beneficial.”
When Yudhishthir asked which fast is Govatsa Dwadashi and what is the procedure for observing it? When and how did it originate? Shri Krishna said that in Satyayuga, all the sages were doing penance with the desire to have darshan of Lord Shankar on the peak named Tantavi of the mountain named Namavratadhara in virtuous Jambumarg (Bhaduch). Maharishi Bhrigu’s ashram was also there. Was coordinated with various deers and monkeys. In the interest of giving darshan to those sages, Lord Shankar disguised himself as an old Brahmin.
A thin and weak Brahmin came there with a stick in his hand. Parvati also came there in the form of a beautiful cow. During the churning of Kshirsagar, five cows were born along with nectar-Nanda, Subhadra, Surbhi, Sushila and BahulaShe has been called Lokmata because she was born for public service and to satisfy the gods. The gods had given these five cows to Maharishi Jamadagni, Bhardwaj, Vashishtha, Asit and Gautam Muni.
Six parts of cows – dung, urine, milk, milk and ghee – These are also very sacred and means of purification. Bilva tree was born from cow dung, Goddess Lakshmi is present in it, that is why it is called Shri Vriksha. Lotus seeds have arisen from cow dung only. Guggul has originated from cow urine, which is pleasant in appearance and fragrant and is the food of all the gods. The basic ingredients in the world are derived from cow’s milk. All auspicious substances are produced from curd. Ghee produces nectar, which is a means of satisfying the gods. Yagya is performed only with the help of cow.
Goshu Yagya: Pravartante Goshu Deva: Pratishitah. Goshu Veda: Samutkirna: Sapdangapadkrama: ॥ (Bhavishya Purana Uttarparva 69.24)
That is, the entire Vedas including its six organs are contained in the cow itself.
- Brahma and Vishnu are revered at the base of the horns of cows.
- All the pastures and all the pilgrimage places are enshrined in the front part of the horn.
- Mahadev Shiva is established in the middle as the cause of all the reasons.
- Gauri in the forehead of the cow, Kartikeya in the nostrils, Kambal and Ashvatara in both the nostrils are the two serpents revered.
- Ashwini Kumar in both the ears, Moon and Sun in the eyes, eight Vasuganas in the teeth.
- Varun in the tongue, Saraswati in the mouth, Yama and Yaksha in the buttocks, both Sandhyas in the lips.
- Indra is present in the neck, Rakshas in the neck, Dyu in the pani-bhaag and religion always resides in the four feet of the thighs.
- Gandharvas are present in the middle of the hoofs, snakes in the front part and Rakshasas in the western part.
- Eleventh Rudra is situated in the back of the cow, Varun in all the joints, ancestors in the waist, humans in the cheeks and Swaharupa Alankar is present in the Apana.
- Ganga is actually present in cow urine and Yamuna is present in cow urine. Thirty-three crore gods are revered in the Rome group.
- Earth is located in the stomach with mountains and forests. The four great oceans are located in the four Payodhars.
- There are clouds, rain and water points in the streams of milk, Garhapatya fire in the stomach, Dakshinagri in the heart, Ahavaniyani in the throat and Savyagni in the palate.
- The mountain is situated in the bones of cows and the yagya is situated in the marrow.
All the Vedas are also revered in cows. Bhagwati Uma remembered the form of those perfumes and made her own form similar. Advanced from six places, Lord Shankar was grazing happily. Slowly he went to that ashram and went to Vice Chancellor Bhrigu and he gave the cow to him for its protection for two days and said – ‘Mune! After taking bath here, I will go to Jambu area and will return after two days, till then you protect this cow.
The sage also agreed to protect that cow in every way. Lord Shiva disappeared there and then after some time he appeared in the form of a tiger and started scaring the cow along with the calf. The sages also became afraid of the tiger and started screaming and trying to drive away the tiger as much as possible. Due to fear of the tiger, Savatsa cow also started jumping and mooing. When the cow ran away in fear of the tiger, the mark of its four hoofs was left in the middle of the rock.
In the sky, the gods and eunuchs worshiped the tiger (Lord Shankar) and the cow Savatsa (Mother Parvati). That mark on the rock is clearly visible even today. That is the holy pilgrimage of Narmadaji. Anyone who touches the Shivalinga of Shambhutirtha here becomes free from cow slaughter. By taking bath in that Mahatirtha located on Jambu Marg, one gets freedom from the sins of Brahmahatya etc. When the Savatsa cow was getting frightened by the tiger, the sages got angry and started ringing the bell which made terrible noises which they had received from Brahma.
Due to that sound, even the tiger left the cow and went away. Brahmins named it Dhundhagiri. The humans who see him become Rudraswarupa. Within a few moments, Lord Shankar left the tiger form and appeared there in person. He was seated on a bull, Bhagwati Uma was seated on his left side and along with Vinayak, Kartikeya, he was surrounded by Nandi, Mahakal, Shringi, Veerbhadra, Chamunda, Ghantakarna etc. and a group of Matra’s, ghosts, Yakshas, Devs, demons, Gandharvas, Munis. , Sanakadi was also worshiping him.
On the Dwadashi date of Shukla Paksha (accordingly Krishna Paksha) of Kartik month, Savatsa Gorupdharini Umadevi was worshiped by the name Nandini, that is why Govatsa Dwadashi fast is observed on this day. Listen to the way King Uttanapad propagated this fast on earth –
There was a Kshatriya king named Uttanpad. Who had two queens named Suruchi and Shutri (Suniti). Suniti had a son named Dhruv. Suniti handed over her son to Suruchi and said – ‘O friend! You protect it. I will always be ready to volunteer. Suruchi always took care of the housework and Suniti, who was devoted to her husband, always served her husband. Due to hatred towards his wife, Suruchi, out of anger and jealousy, killed Suniti’s child, but he immediately came alive and settled in his mother’s lap, laughing. Similarly, Suruchi did this misdeed many times, but the child would come back to life again and again. Surprised to see him alive, Suruchi asked Suniti, what kind of strange incident is this and which fast is it the result of, which havan or fast ritual have you performed? Due to which your son comes back to life again and again.
Suniti said – He has observed Govatsa fast on the day of Kartik month’s Dwadashi, due to which my son becomes alive again. Whenever I remember him, he comes to me. Due to the effect of this fast, one gets a son even while traveling. O Suruchi, by observing this Govatsa Dwadashi fast! You will also get everything. Creator Brahma established Suruchi with her husband Uttanpad and even today she is happy.
Yudhishthir said- Oh God! Also tell the method of this fast.
Lord Shri Krishna said that in the month of Kartik, on Shukla Paksha Dwadashi, after taking bath in the reservoir, a man or a woman should eat food only once. At the time of mid-afternoon, worship the Vatsa Sammanvit cow with the scent of cow, flowers, Akshat, kumkum, alaktak, lamp, urad leaves, flowers and flower garlands with this mantra –
Om Mata Rudranam Duhita Vasoonam Swasadityanamritsya Nabhi. Pra nu vochan chikitushe janaya ma gamnagamaditin vadhistha namo namah svaha. (Rig Veda 8. 101. 15)
After worshiping in this way, provide grass to the cow and touch the cow with the following mantra.
Pray and ask for forgiveness- Om Sarvdevmaye Devi Lokanam Shubhananandini. Mother’s wish is successful, Kuru Nandini. (Bhavishya Purana Uttarparva 69.85) In this way, after worshiping the cow, sprinkle it with water and pay obeisance to the cow with devotion. Do not eat food cooked on the tawa on that day and sleep celibately on the earth. Due to the effect of this fast, the devotee enjoys all the pleasures and ultimately resides in the cow world for as many years as the cow has shed.
Kartik Dwadashi is a festival in the name of Govatsa, if that date falls on Pradosh Vyapini on both the days, then the first one should be taken, because it is written in the ruling that Vatsa Puja has to be done on the first of these two days. It is written in Bhavishya Purana that Savatsa, Sushil, milking cow should be worshiped with sandalwood and flowers. Make water in a copper vessel along with intact sesame seeds and give it to the hooves of the cows with the feeling that it has appeared from the ocean of milk. O worshiper of God! Hey mother! Accept this Arghya, salutations to you.”
On this day, do not eat food cooked in oil, cow’s milk, curd, ghee, whey. Narad has said in Jyotirnibandh that in the Krishna Paksha of Ashwin, aarti should be performed on the night before on the five dates like Dwadashi etc. Aarti should be performed for the gods, cows, horses, eldest, best, younger, mothers etc. According to the English calendar, it is falling on 28 November 2024 this year.
