Bengaluru, Karnataka: The state food department has adopted a strict stance on the issue of food quality. Already the use of artificial colors and chemicals in Gobi Manchurian has been banned. Now, by installing food testing kits in public places and malls, inspection has been started to identify poor quality food items. This process has left Golgappa fans worried that this popular street food may also get banned.
Increased monitoring on the quality of Golgappa
Due to continuous complaints on the quality of Golgappa, the Food Department has started keeping a close watch on the manufacturing centers of Golgappa. Continuing the food testing campaign, now Golgappa has also been brought under scrutiny. Golgappa samples are being collected randomly from various places in Bengaluru and tested. Golgappa samples have been collected from more than 200 places across Karnataka, including Bengaluru, which have been sent for testing.
Golgappa ingredients and health effects
The Food Department is now trying to know how the Puri used in Golgappa is made, what ingredients are added to it and what effect it can have on health. In the last two days, the Food Department has raided Golgappa manufacturing units. The samples collected have now been sent to the laboratory for testing, and after the report comes in a few days, it will be clear whether Golgappa will be banned or not.
Allegations of use of dangerous substances in Golgappa
There have been allegations of use of dangerous substances like urea and harpic to enhance the taste of Golgappa. After similar allegations were made in other states, the Food and Quality Department of Karnataka has increased vigilance and necessary steps are being taken. The Food Department has made efforts to ensure the quality and safety of food items by installing “Rapid Food Testing Kits” at public places. Along with this, the department’s strictness on Golgappa has also increased.
