Narak Chaturdashi 2024: Narak Chaturdashi, which is celebrated a day before Lakshmi Puja of Diwali. Its mention is found in Uttarparva Chapter 140 of Bhavishya Purana. In this, Lord Shri Krishna tells Maharaj Yudhishthir that Lord Vishnu, in the incarnation of Vaman, defeated the demon king Bali and restored his kingdom to Indra.
After this, King Bali was installed in the underworld and Lord Vishnu promised to stay with Bali. The activities of demons increase on the earth on the night of Kartik Amavasya.
Yudhishthir asked- Lord! Please tell us specifically the method of Kaumudi Tithi. What item is donated on that day? Which deity should be worshiped and which sport should be played.
Lord Shri Krishna said – King! To remove the fear of hell, one must take bath in the morning on Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. Swirl the leaves of Apamarga (chichra) over the vinegar while reciting the mantra. The mantra is as follows: –
Every sinful path, Bhramyamaanam again again. Aapdam Kilbisham Chapi Mamapahar Sarvash. Apamarg, Namaste, body, mother, shodhay. (Bhavishya Purana Uttarparva 140.9)
After this, offer prayers by reciting the names of Dharamraj (Yamraj) – Yama, Dharamraj, Mrityu, Vaivaswat, Antak, Kaal and Sarvabhutakshay. After worshiping the gods, light a lamp to escape from hell. At the time of Pradosh, lamps should be lit in the temples of Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma etc., in places like warehouse, chaitya, sabhamandap, etc.
Narak Chaturdashi Puja Vidhi
- On the day of Amavasya, take bath in the morning and worship the gods and ancestors with devotion.
- Offer food to a Brahmin and give him Dakshina. In the afternoon the king should declare in his kingdom that today Bali is ruling this world.
- All the people of the city should clean their houses according to their capacity and decorate them with different types of colorful flags, garlands and bandanas.
- In the morning, apply ointment, take bath and worship, wear new clothes. Light the lamp in the evening. At the time of Pradosh, demons roam around in the world.
- To remove their fear, girls should perform Nirajan with lamps by throwing tandul (paddy slag) on trees.
- By lighting the lamps, Pradosh Vela becomes flawless and the fear of demons goes away.
- After midnight, when everyone is asleep, the women of the house should roam around the house and come to the courtyard while playing the soup and in this way they should drive out poverty-Alakshmi from their house.
- As soon as the morning comes, please satisfy the good men by giving them clothes, jewelery etc. and welcome the pundits with sweet words by giving them food and tambul.
- Organize many types of carnival games etc. After noon, tie a Margpali made of Kush on a tall pillar or tree in the eastern direction of the city and worship it and then perform Havan.
- Aarti of Margpali should be performed. This aarti grants victory. After that everyone should come out from under that turnpike.
- The one who ties Margpali saves both his clans. King Bali should establish the idol and worship King Bali with flowers like lotus, lotus, kahar, blood lotus etc. along with fragrance, lamp, naivedya, akshat and lamps and many gifts.

After worshiping in this way, the festival should be celebrated with vigil at night. Kaumudi Utsav
Lord Vishnu was pleased and obtained the earth from Bali and gave it to King Bali on the Amavasya date of Karti, from that day the festival of Kaumudi started. ‘Ku’ is the word meaning earth and ‘Mudi’ means happiness. Therefore, because of giving happiness to everyone on earth, it was named Kaumudi.
There is a festival of sacrifice on one day in the year; there is no fear of disease, enemy, epidemic and famine in the state. Good luck, health and wealth increase. The person who remains in the same mood on this Kaumudi Tithi, gets the same feeling throughout the year, hence one should remain cheerful and happy on this Tithi.
This date is Vaishnavi, demonic and ancestral too. The person who worships Raja Balika with devotion on the day of Deepmala, spends the whole year happily and all his wishes are fulfilled.
