IAW of the MoRD detected discrepancies leading to losses totaling Rs 35.37 crore in some districts of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh under MG-NREGS


Union Ministry of Rural Development Internal Audit: The Internal Audit Wing (IAW) of the Union Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) has made a big disclosure. The IAW has detected anomalies amounting to a total loss of Rs 35.37 crore in some districts of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MG-NREGS) during 2023-24.

Of this, IAW has detected a loss of Rs 34.02 crore in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu alone, besides a loss of Rs 1.09 crore in Nagaur (Rajasthan) and Rs 26 lakh in Morena (Madhya Pradesh). According to sources, the lapses detected by the IAW are part of the Annual Review of Performance Audit for 2023-24, a report prepared by the Office of the Chief Controller of Accounts and shared with the MoRD.

Audit of 92 works was done across the country

IAW audited 92 works of various rural development schemes including MGNREGS across the country during 2023-24. The report also revealed that a loss of Rs 5.20 lakh was found in the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana (PMAY-G) in Pherjawal district of Manipur.

Losses found in other schemes also

According to the report, IAW has undertaken construction work in Gujarat, Sikkim, Manipur, Odisha, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar under MG-NREGS, PMAY-G and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). Cases of wasteful and unauthorized expenditure on works were also found. The total amount of wasteful and unauthorized expenditure in these states was reported to be Rs 15.20 crore.

There was a loss of Rs 23.17 crore in the last financial year

In the last financial year (2022-23), IAW had found a loss of Rs 23.17 crore in the implementation of NREGS, PMGSY and National Social Assistance Program (NSAP). The highest loss was recorded under MGNREGS which was around Rs 22.39 crore. After this, there was Rs 74 lakh in PMGSY and Rs 2 lakh in NSAP. Loss was recorded from two districts in MGNREGS. This includes Rs 22.28 crore in Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh and Rs 11.80 lakh in Nadia district of West Bengal. Under PMGSY, a loss of Rs 74 lakh was found in West Tripura district, while under NSAP a loss of Rs 2.81 lakh was found in Malda, West Bengal.
