Moun Charana Tradition: Many ancient traditions are still alive in different parts of India, and the tradition of “silence grazing” of Bundelkhand is an important link among them. Especially in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, a unique tradition of herding silence after Diwali is seen. The history of this unique tradition is linked to Lord Shri Krishna, who is also known as ‘Mauniya’. It is believed that Shri Krishna also remained silent while carrying a cow, and since then this tradition became popular.
What is silent grazing?
Maun Charana is a special type of religious and cultural fast, in which a person observes a fast of silence for a day. On this day they do not consume food, nor wear shoes. Early in the morning the herders worship the heifer (calf) and start their journey with the praises of Lord Krishna. At dusk they return to their villages after grazing the cows.
PD Pal’s story: Following tradition along with studies
PD Pal of Chhatarpur is a young student, who is studying B.Pharmacy from Sagar. While talking to Local18, he says that he has been following this tradition for the last 10 years. He learned this tradition from his family in his childhood itself. PD Pal says that his love for his village is so deep that he returns every year to continue this tradition along with his studies. Silent grazing is not just a religious activity for them, but a spiritual experience which makes them feel closer to Lord Krishna.
How to graze silence?
The process of herding silence is also quite interesting. Five peacock feathers are required in the first year, and five feathers each are added each subsequent year. In this way a total of 60 feathers are collected in 12 years. According to the belief, the silent herders tie these feathers to the tail of the heifer, and no thread or twine is used during this. It is said that this tradition has been going on since the era of Lord Shri Krishna.
Prasad distribution during the tradition of silent grazing
During Mauni grazing, groups of Maunis from other villages and towns also come. These groups meet together and after that Prasad like Lai-Dana, Gari, Batasha and Gatta are distributed. After receiving the Prasad, this fast is observed for 12 years. Apart from this, a fast is also observed in the 13th year as an extra year’s interest, which is considered extremely important religiously.
Spiritual significance of this tradition
Maun Charana fast reflects the teachings of Lord Krishna. It is believed that a person who observes this fast in mind, speech and action for 13 years can become free from worldly attachments and attain salvation. This fast is considered a symbol of patience, restraint and spiritual practice even in all adverse circumstances of life.

Bundelkhand’s Diwari festival and the tradition of silent grazing has a special place in the country. This festival not only reveals the regional cultural heritage but also creates a spiritual and emotional bond between the youth and the elders.
