Created ahead of the upcoming crop season, the new categories include about 8,000 varieties of seeds, which are to be procured by central and state public sector undertakings and other governing bodies for scaling up across the country.
170 categories of seeds have been launched on the government e-marketplace i.e. GeM portal. The objective of which is to make it easier for farmers to access quality agricultural and horticultural seeds. The official statement issued by the government agency said that about 8,000 types of seed varieties have been included in the new categories, created ahead of the upcoming crop season. Which can be purchased by Central and State PSUs and other governing bodies for further dissemination across the country.
The seed categories created after consultation with stakeholders including State Seed Corporations and research bodies are providing a ready framework for purchasing seeds on the GeM portal. In which the existing terms and conditions are included. These terms and conditions have been made by the Government of India to simplify the procurement process.
The aim is to make it convenient
Adding new categories of seeds on the portal is a part of GeM’s long-term strategy. The move is also aimed at reducing the time taken in tender processes, with an emphasis on increasing efficiency, promoting transparency and accountability in government procurement, while facilitating increased participation of vendors across the country.

Roli Khare, Deputy CEO, GeM, has said that it expects the sellers to benefit from these new seed categories and invites them to participate freely in the government tenders and list as per their demand. Seed corporations and state bodies are also being encouraged to use new categories for cost-effective procurement of quality seeds.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi It had released 109 high-yielding, climate resilient and biofortified varieties of crops in August this year to increase crop production and farmers’ income.
