The High Court has upheld the life imprisonment of five convicts, including Jyoti’s husband Piyush Shyamdasani, convicted in the Jyoti murder case. In the case, accused Piyush’s alleged girlfriend Manisha Makhija has got relief from the High Court. The High Court has acquitted Manisha on the basis of lack of sufficient evidence.
Shankarlal Nagdev, a resident of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, married his daughter Jyoti to Piyush Shyamdasani, a biscuit trader from Kanpur. Jyoti was kidnapped and murdered on 27 July 2014. Initially Piyush had told the police the story of Jyoti being kidnapped by robbers but later the police revealed that Piyush himself had conspired with hired killers to kill Jyoti. In this, six accused including Piyush and his alleged girlfriend Manisha Makhija were sent to jail. On October 21, 2022, the court of Additional District Judge I had sentenced Piyush Shyamdasani, Sonu Kashyap, Renu alias Akhilesh Kanojia, Ashish Kashyap, Awadhesh Chaturvedi and Manisha Makhija to life imprisonment for the crime of involvement in murder and conspiracy. Manisha, Awadhesh and Ashish got bail from the High Court while Piyush, Renu and Sonu are in jail.
After the order of the High Court, now Awadhesh and Ashish will also have to surrender and go to jail. Justice Arvind Kumar Sangwan and Justice Mohd. A two-member division bench of Azhar Hussain Idrisi disposed of seven appeals in a 105-page judgment. This included six appeals of the convicts along with the appeal of Jyoti’s father Shankarlal Nagdev for sentencing the accused Piyush’s mother Poonam, brother Mukesh and cousin Kamlesh who were acquitted by the sessions court.
