BSNL launches India’s first Satellite-to-Device service to provide connectivity without network

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched the first “Satellite-to-Device” service in India, which will provide connectivity even in the most remote areas of the country. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced this on Wednesday and said that this service has been started in collaboration with American company Viasat. The aim of this new technology is to provide connectivity in areas where normal mobile networks do not reach.

BSNL did wonders

Let us tell you that even today there are many areas in India where the network of any telecom company including Jio, Airtel, Vodafone-Idea is not accessible, due to which the people living there are not able to take advantage of the telecom connection. This happens especially in hilly and forested areas. To overcome this problem of people, BSNL has started satellite-to-device service for the first time in India, through which people will be able to use telecom connectivity even without phone network.

This service was first introduced at the India Mobile Congress (IMC 2024). This is being considered an important step towards reducing the digital divide in India. According to BSNL, testing of the “Satellite-to-Device” service has been completed, and it is capable of providing stable connections even in a variety of challenging areas.

DoT announced this on Recently, some mobile brands had launched features that provide satellite connectivity in case of emergency, but they are limited to emergency services only. Now even common citizens can connect with this service of BSNL in remote areas.

People will also be able to make UPI payment

This satellite network of BSNL will help users in emergency calls, SOS messages and even UPI payments. However, the company has not clarified whether this feature will be available for normal calls and SMS.

BSNL’s partner company Viasat said that this service is being made possible through geostationary L-band satellites located at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers from the earth. During IMC 2024, Viasat demonstrated this technology and also showed the capability of two-way communication.

However, despite the growing excitement around the launch, BSNL has not yet revealed how customers will be able to use the service. It is not yet known whether the existing users of BSNL will get this service in the existing plan or additional charges will be levied. It is expected that detailed information about this service of BSNL will be made available soon.
