The Delhi government’s cabinet has unanimously recommended Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to immediately reinstate the bus marshals. The Cabinet says planning for bus marshals is a law and order issue with the services. For this reason, LG has been requested to make a plan for bus marshals. Pending the plan, bus marshals should be immediately reinstated as before October 31, 2023.
The Lieutenant Governor should immediately allow the use of Civil Defense Volunteers as bus marshals. At the same time, the Delhi government says that it has taken the historic step of appointing bus marshals to provide a safe environment to women inside the buses. With this, passengers, especially women, can be protected from molestation, crime and violence.
Chief Minister Atishi wrote in his letter that he has given several instructions to the department to restart the process of hiring bus marshals. However, this service falls under the jurisdiction of LG. For this reason only they should take this decision. Atishi requested the LG to look at the matter from a humanitarian perspective as it requires immediate attention.
