History Of Howrah Bridge: Howrah Bridge is famous all over the world including India for its design and beauty. It is built on the Hooghly River in Howrah, but do you know the history of Howrah Bridge? The work of building Howrah Bridge was started by the British Government in 1936, but this bridge was completed only in 1942. However, till now it was not opened to the general public. Howrah Bridge was opened to the common people on 3 February 1943, but you will be surprised to know that Howrah Bridge has not been inaugurated till date.

26 thousand tonnes of steel was used to build Howrah Bridge, out of which 23 thousand tonnes of Tiscal steel was supplied by Tata Steel. The credit for its construction is given to the workers of Tata Steel and BBJ Construction Company Limited. Although, building Howrah Bridge was not easy, but the workers of Tata Steel and BBJ Construction Company Limited completed the construction work despite all the obstacles. You will be surprised to know that the entire Howrah Bridge rests on two 280 feet high pillars built on both the banks of the Hooghly River. The distance between the two pillars is one and a half thousand feet.
