Utpanna Ekadashi fasting story (Utpanna Ekadashi Katha)
In Satyayuga there was a terrible demon named Mur. Mur was very powerful and hideous. With his extraordinary powers, Mur defeated not only Indradev but also many other gods and he started ruling Indralok. To end the atrocities of Mur, all the gods went to Lord Shiva for help. Lord Shiva suggested him to appear before Lord Vishnu, the lord of the three worlds.
Lord Vishnu decided to help the gods by defeating the demon Mur. Lord Vishnu along with other gods reached a city named Chandravati. The demon Mur used to rule this city. On one side there was Lord Shri Hari Vishnu and on the other side the demon Mur was eager for war with his entire army. According to the legend, Lord Vishnu destroyed the entire army of Mur with his Sudarshan Chakra and divine mace, but all the weapons of Lord Vishnu proved ineffective against the powers of the demon Mur. Neither his Sudarshan Chakra nor his mace were capable of cutting off the head or breaking the neck of the demon Mur.
After a long battle with weapons between Lord Vishnu and Mur, a wrestling match started. In wrestling, war is fought with physical force rather than using weapons. According to beliefs, the war between Lord Vishnu and Mur continued for 10,000 years. Seeing that there was no end to this war, Lord Vishnu put an end to the war and went to rest in Hemvati cave located in Badrikashram.
The demon Mur chased Lord Vishnu and reached Badrikashram. The demon Mur found Lord Vishnu sleeping and thought that this was an opportune moment to kill Lord Vishnu. To counter such demonic spirit within the demon Mur, a powerful girl appeared from the divine body of Lord Vishnu. That girl was glorious, powerful and was equipped with all types of weapons to protect Lord Vishnu. This feminine power of Lord Vishnu defeated Mur in the war and killed him by placing her foot on his chest and cutting off his head.
All the gods started praising the extraordinary power of that girl. When Lord Vishnu woke up from sleep, he was not aware of his power and he requested the girl to introduce herself. While introducing herself, the girl described herself as the Shakti of Lord Vishnu which was born from Lord Vishnu’s Yoga Maya. Lord Vishnu was very pleased with her feminine power and requested her to seek boon for this great work.
The girl said, please grant me such power, with the effect of which all the sins of those observing fast for my sake will be destroyed and they will attain salvation. Please bless me to become the most important and best among all the pilgrimages. Lord, give me such a boon that I will be able to provide religion, grains and salvation to my devotees.
Lord Vishnu blessed the girl and said, “You were born on Ekadashi date, hence you will be famous by the name of Ekadashi in all the worlds. You will be worshiped not only by humans but also by gods in all ages. Ekadashi fast I will not be more pleased with anything than this. Your devotees will enjoy all kinds of worldly pleasures and attain salvation in the end.
