However, it is not cultivated although it grows on its own. Earlier, Tumba used to become a headache for the farmers and they used to throw it out from the fields, but now farmers are earning a good income by collecting this Tumba. This Tumba is now in demand across the country.
Farmer Gopal told that the yellow colored Tumba is considered to be the most bitter fruit. Due to the medicinal importance of Tumba, its demand has started increasing and it has now become a sweet source of income for the farmers. In rainfed fields, it grows as a weed along with the crops of guar, moth, moong and millet. When the rains reduce, Tumba vine grows even in the vacant fields. It is sold in the market for Rs 30 to 40 per kg. This Tumba season lasts for four months.
Farmers are also getting a lot of benefits
Earlier, farmers considered it a weed and spent hard work and money to remove it from the field. Now due to the demand of Tumba, it has become a source of income for the villagers. In such a situation, people are earning lakhs of rupees by collecting Tumba from the fields and selling it to traders. Apart from this, hundreds of laborers have got employment for cutting the tumba, drying it and collecting and extracting the seeds. Those who buy them at the rate of Rs 220 to 250 per quintal, cut them, dry them and take out the seeds.
Used in Ayurvedic medicines
Ayurvedic doctor Mukesh Kumar Gehlot says that Tumba is given to animals as a medicine, which is effective. Nowadays it is also being used in many indigenous and Ayurvedic medicines. It should be taken only in prescribed quantity as per doctor’s advice. The peel of Tumba is also used in medicines to increase the immunity of animals. This herb is being used in Ayurvedic medicines for diseases like diabetes, jaundice, back pain etc. Tumba medicine is beneficial in diseases occurring in cow, buffalo, sheep, goat, camel etc. Tube is in demand across the country including Delhi.
