Obesity is a growing global health concern. And its effects extend far beyond the risks of heart disease and diabetes. An area that often does not receive attention. That is, there is a strong connection between obesity and joint health. Excess body weight can put a lot of pressure on your joints, especially knees, hips and spine. Due to which wear and tear on the joints increases and the risk of chronic joint diseases like osteoarthritis increases.
The relationship between obesity and joint pain is like this:
increased mechanical stress– With every additional pound of body weight, an additional force is exerted on the weight-bearing joints, which eventually causes problems with walking, climbing stairs and more.
completely swollenObesity leads to a lower level of inflammation throughout the body. Fat tissue produces inflammatory chemicals that can contribute to the breakdown of joint cartilage.
low mobilityObesity often limits physical activity, leading to muscle weakness, decreased bone density and joint stability, which further increases joint problems.
Tips to maintain the health of your joints:
Maintain a healthy weight – When we spoke to Dr. Apoorva Dua, Orthopedics Consultant, India Spinal Injury Center, Vasant Kunj, he said that losing even 5-10% of your body weight can significantly reduce the stress on your joints. Reduction may occur and the progression of joint diseases may slow down.
remain active – Do low-impact exercises like swimming, walking or cycling to strengthen muscles and improve joint flexibility without increasing stress.
follow a balanced diet -Include anti-inflammatory foods like nuts, whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid processed and sugary foods which can increase inflammation.
Avoid standing or sitting for long periods of time– Alternate between sitting and standing to avoid unnecessary pressure and stiffness on the joints.
Choose supportive shoes- Wear comfortable, well-cushioned shoes to reduce the impact on your knees and hips.
Treatment options for obesity-related joint problems:
Non-surgical treatment options include controlling weight, changing dietary habits, regular exercise, and physical therapy. In cases where non-surgical methods are inadequate, surgical intervention may be necessary.

arthroscopy – A minimally invasive procedure used to repair joint damage, such as tearing of cartilage, or removing loose fragments.
synovectomy -Removing inflamed synovial membranes in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis to relieve pain and improve joint function.
