Shashi Tharoor On Siddique Kappan: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor lauded the release of Siddiqui Kappan, who has been in jail for the last two years in UP jail. Tharoor said that arresting Kappan is a misuse of the law of UAPA and is worrying for democracy.
He said that this situation is very worrying that one such law in our country is UAPA, through which the government can keep a person in custody indefinitely and without charge. This is a worrying situation for democracy.
Who is Siddique Kappan?
Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan was released on bail on Thursday. About two years ago, after the death of a woman in Hathras, UP, Kappan was arrested for trying to incite violence.
Kappan’s release came about six weeks after he was granted bail in the Allahabad High Court in the ED’s money laundering case. In September, the Supreme Court granted him bail in another case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
What did Kappan say after coming out of jail?
After coming out of jail, Kappan said that I struggled. Some people were waiting for Kappan outside the jail, which included his wife and son. Kappan said that it has been 28 months. I have come out after a lot of struggle. I’m happy.
The Supreme Court headed by the then Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit had ordered the release of Kappan. Kappan and three others were arrested in October 2020, where a Dalit woman died after being raped.
Congress appreciated after the release
After the release of Siddiqui Kappan, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said that finally Article 21 of the Constitution has won. Former Home Minister Chidambaram said that I am happy that in the end the Constitution won.
He said that the judges of the lower court should consider the demand for judicial custody with foresight, because this custody is actually like a jail before the completion of the trial.
