17 year old boy stayed awake for 11 days create guinness world record in 1963 randy gardner

Someday if you wake up late in the night, then the next day you feel sleepy from morning itself. The whole day gets wasted in this affair. Many times people are not able to sleep whole night due to marriage or travel and the next day is spent in sleeping. Due to lack of sleep even for a day, sleep comes very fast. But have you ever wondered that the maximum number of days a person can remain awake? Many years ago two friends made a bet on who could stay awake longer. This bet, started in fun, got the World Record for Staying Awake made, but after that the young man (Man stayed awake for 11 days) had to pay a huge price!

In December 1963, 17-year-old Randy Gardner and his friend Bruce McAllister, living in America, got a project in school which was related to sleep. For his science project, he had to see how long a person can live without sleeping. He knew that Tom Rounds, a DJ from Honolulu, had made a world record (Boy who stayed awake for 11 days) by staying awake continuously for 260 hours i.e. 10 days.

Doctors were continuously monitoring the young man
Both tried to keep themselves awake without consuming any medicine or substance and started the bet that who would be able to stay awake longer. Both tossed the coin as to who would be a part of this experiment and who would be the judge. Bruce won when the coin was tossed, so Randy had to wake up. Both remained without sleep for 3 days, but then suddenly Bruce fell asleep while making notes. For this reason, he called a friend of his, Joe Marciano, and then invited sleep researcher William Dement. A doctor named John Ross was monitoring Randy’s health.

The young man slept continuously for 14 hours after the experiment
From the 10th day of the experiment, Randy started having hallucinations. He was not even able to do simple maths questions. He finished his experiment after 11 days and 25 minutes and broke the record of Tom Rounds. But then he came to know what is the importance of gold. After finishing the experiment, he slept continuously for 14 hours and automatically woke up from his sleep. At that time nothing happened to him, but during the year 2000, he had insomnia problem. He understood that it was because of his experiment that he had this problem. However, after a lot of efforts, he was able to get 6 hours of sleep. The name of the young man is also recorded in the Guinness World Record and since then the Guinness World Record has also refused to register such a record because staying up late has a bad effect on the body.
