Detail Review: ‘F9’ is the most boring film of ‘Fast and Furious’ series

Detail Review ‘F9’: Making Fast 9 should have been a left-handed game for director Justin Lin. After all, he directed the first Fast and the Furious film. After this, he also directed the 5th and 6th films of this series. It is being said that after Fast 9 no other film will be made in this series i.e. this will be the last film and it had to be amazing. The film hit the theaters on 19 May 2021 and was the 5th biggest hit film of the year. Probably for this reason it took a long time to release it on OTT.

It is surprising that compared to all the other films in this series, this film has appeared to be the weakest. People thronged the theaters to watch every expensive film released after Kovid, so this film also went on. Now released on Amazon Prime Video. Don’t watch it expecting an action thriller film with amazing stunts, you are likely to be disappointed. It doesn’t look like a fast series.

As long as Paul Walker and Vin Diesel used to commit more than one crime with their gang members, driving cars at dangerous places and showing stunts, the thrill of watching this series remained. People were on their lips till the dialogues of the film. Ironically, Paul Walker died in a car accident that left Fast and the Furious 7 unfinished. After some time, with the help of Paul’s brother Caleb and Cody, using special effects and computer graphics, the remaining scenes of the film were completed and the film was released.

Subsequent films such as “The Fate of the Furious”, Fast and Furious Present Hobbs & Shaw and Fast 9, all three films are struggling with the lack of Paul Walker. Vin Diesel can’t run the film alone and action actors like Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Alba and now John Cena were brought in to support him but the fun never materialized as Paul Walker’s calmness against Vin Diesel’s angry look Nature used to keep the films of this series very balanced.

The story of Fast 9 also seems to have been written just because another anti-hero character was to be brought into the series and another sequel was to be made in this series. Gary Scott Thompson created the main characters of the Fast and the Furious series. It is a matter of pride that every time he is given credit in the films written on his characters. Chris Morgan, who is associated with the second film of this series, “Tokyo Drift”, is not the writer of the film this time, but this time Justin Lin has included Daniel Casey and Alfredo Botello to write. Here is the biggest mistake.

The story goes into a brief flashback where Dominic Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) father is killed in an accident at the race track. Angry with the world, Vin fights with his brother and throws him out of the house. Years later, the same brother, Jacob (John Cena), goes on a mission to win the world’s best hacking device “Project ARIES” from the hands of Vin and his team. Vin’s own team includes girlfriend Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), sister Mia (Johanna Brewster), Roman (Tyreuse Gibson), Tej (Ludacris) and Ramsay (Nathalie Emmanuel).

In front are Vin’s brother Jakob (John Cena), Cipher (Charlize Theron) and Otto (Thew Rasmussen). While searching for Jacob, Vin and his team travel across countries until they find Han (Sung Kang), an old friend of Vin’s who has been missing for years. Then the same car chases, blast scenes, pulling huge vehicles with magnets fitted in the car, destroying vehicles on city roads, stunts making fun of gravity, ie everything guaranteed in the Fast and the Furious series, is also present in this. What is missing this time is the ability to engage the audience in the story.

Vin Diesel should think again about his character and acting. There is not much scope of acting in action series films, but after giving new dimensions to the character, at least one can think of acting in a new way. He continues to dominate the character of Dominic Toretto in every film. Michelle Rodriguez has played a better character and acting than her. Be it action scenes or emotional scenes, she looks very comfortable. Sung Kang’s entry could have been better as he has appeared with the gang after a long time. However, he does not have any special work ahead. John Cena does not know how to act and he is an action star, yet why he accepted this role is beyond comprehension.

Charlize Theron is also a big actress, why did she work in this film for such a small role, while her role in Fast 8 in the same series was very big and important. Rest of the actors are fit in their roles, as they have been doing, they are doing the same this time also. His characters were neither main before nor are they main now. Dwayne Johnson will probably not return to this series because he does not get along with Vin Diesel. If Dwayne is not there, even Jason Statham will not return. By the way, the filming of Fast 10 has started and will be released in 2023.

Stephen F. Windon, the cinematographer of almost all the films of The Gray Man and Fast and the Furious series released on Netflix recently, has handled the camera this time too. Perhaps this time not much detailing was done in the action sequences and that’s why the camera could not show amazing. The scene of a car hitting a satellite in space looks ridiculous. Along with stunt coordinators Andy Gill, Gregory Barnett and Geoffrey Barnett, the entire crew of about 250 people was involved in the shooting of this film.

There were also some amazing English stunts but they were weak compared to the old films of the series. The thing that could have made fun here was the audience getting emotionally attached to the stunts, but this time it stayed away from the film. Fast 9 may have done wonders at the box office, fans of this series will still consider it a weak film. Hopefully something new and big will be seen through Fast 10 because this time the director of Fast 10 is not Justin but Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titan, Transporter, Incredible Hulk etc.). Although it will be fun to see it being a fast series film, but it is not the best film of this series.
