It is said that at that time King Richard won and Queen Anne of Bohemia announced that they were going to get engaged on March 32, 1381. Hearing the news of the engagement, the public was happy, but on March 31, 1381, people understood that March 32 does not come at all. After this people understood that they have been fooled. It is said that since then March 32, i.e. April 1, was celebrated as Fool’s Day. According to some stories, April Fool’s Day had already started in 1392.

According to some stories, New Year was first celebrated on 1st April in European countries. But, when Pope Gregory 13 ordered to adopt a new calendar, the new year started being celebrated from January 1. Some people were still celebrating the new year on 1st April itself.
