Study Finds Slightly Higher Risk Of Autism Diagnosis In Areas With More Lithium In Drinking Water

Autism Spectrum Disorder: It has been revealed in a research that the high amount of lithium found in water is the cause of autism in children. Nowadays, the amount of lithium in the supply water is very high. With whom a pregnant woman comes in contact, which affects her children. But on the other hand it has also been said that there is no direct relation between lithium found in water and pregnant women. According to data from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 36 children in the US is suffering from autism spectrum disorder (ASD) every year. The cause of autism can also be due to genetics and bad environment.

Autism data according to a 2021 report

A study published this year on cases in New York-New Jersey found that autism diagnosis rates tripled among certain age groups between 2000 and 2016. A 2021 report found a similar increase in cases, but the CDC says the increased number of cases is most likely linked to more doctors screening for the condition.

Lithium levels have increased in US water

A small association was found between lithium and autism diagnoses in Denmark, according to a report published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. Where the researchers say that lithium levels in drinking water are similar to those in US water systems.
The research examined a database of people with mental disorders for children born between 2000 and 2013 to obtain information on 8,842 cases of ASD and 43,864 participants who did not have ASD. They then measured lithium concentrations in 151 public waterworks, which served more than half of Denmark’s population, and mapped where pregnant people lived in relation to them.

According to the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA…

As lithium levels in water increased, the risk of ASD diagnosis increased, said study co-author Dr. Beate Ritz, professor of neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and professor of epidemiology and environmental health at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. There was a slight increased risk. Specifically, those at the second and third highest risk levels during pregnancy had a 24% to 26% higher risk of ASD diagnosed in children, compared to those at the lowest risk level. The group with the highest exposure had a 46% higher risk than those with the lowest level of exposure. The researchers couldn’t tell how much water the pregnant women drank, but they chose Denmark in part because its residents consume the least amount of bottled water in Europe. Research cannot show that lithium exposure directly leads to an autism diagnosis.
