Government is considering eunuchs as puppets
As the information of caste census is spreading along with codification, a large section of eunuchs is preparing to stand against it. A group of eunuchs had said at the time of the caste census in Bihar that the government was going to commit a social crime. The question of Reshma Prasad, the well-known representative of eunuchs in Bihar and outspoken writer-speaker, is sharp, but present. She asks that when caste is determined by birth mother or foster father, how can any government make a separate caste system for that? She says that the government sometimes pretends to keep us in the backward class and sometimes creates a caste for us, as if we are puppets. Prescribing caste and caste codes is sheer social and legal crime.
Caste by birth, rights given by caste are being snatched away
Reshma Prasad is the first transgender in the country to be chosen as its brand ambassador by a municipal corporation. Reshma has been fighting a long battle for the rights of the transgender community. She says that the Bihar government included the transgender community in the backward class citing the Supreme Court order and is now keeping it as a caste in the caste census. Also, she raises an important question – “If a transgender person is from Scheduled Caste-Tribe (SC-ST) by birth and you conduct caste census keeping him in the backward class by surrounding him in the ‘Kinnar’ caste, then it is a crime. Not there? This is like taking away the right of SC-ST reservation from him. Similarly, aren’t transgenders born in a forward family? How can it be right to give them the benefit of backward class reservation while keeping them in the ‘Kinnar’ caste?”
