India Rising Covid Cases Experts Say Common Cold Like Spread Suggests Endemicity Urge Precaution


Experts Views On Coronavirus: The increase in corona cases in India is a sign of the SARS-CoV-2 virus going into an endemic state and behaving like other corona viruses. Because of this, symptoms like common cold arise and they keep on infecting again. An ‘endemic’ in relation to an epidemic means a situation when the disease persists in a population at a low level and continues to grow at a normal level.

However, the scientists assured that due to the endemic nature of the virus, a catastrophic situation like the delta wave of 2021 is unlikely to develop. He cautioned that this spread can be stopped by following the prescribed protocols.

Gautam I Menon, professor and dean of the Department of Physics and Life Sciences at Haryana’s Ashoka University, said, “COVID-19 is effectively endemic in the country and virtually all of us must have encountered an infection by now, whether we call it Know it or not. The virus is behaving like the corona virus, which causes symptoms like the common cold and can infect us again.

Immunologist Satyajit Rath said that there is no information about the actual magnitude of the infection. Questioning the credibility of the number of new cases of Kovid, he said that for a long time, the number of Kovid cases is expected to fluctuate in different places.

Corona cases in India and the reason for their increase

According to the Union Health Ministry, in India on Friday (April 7) corona virus 6,050 new cases were registered and the number of patients undergoing treatment in the country increased to 28,303. The reason for the increase in Kovid cases in India is being attributed to the new sub-variant of the virus XBB.1.16 which has been active in the country for the last few months. The World Health Organization recently said in a statement that there are about 800 sequences of XBB.1.16 in 22 countries and most of the sequences are from India and XBB.1.16 in India has replaced other forms.

Expert opinion on Kovid cases of Kerala and Maharashtra

According to Gautam I Menon, the number of new cases will continue to rise in the coming weeks, especially in Kerala and Maharashtra where surveillance systems are strong but they will not reach delta wave levels. Menon said that according to the current indications, the fraction of severe cases also appears to be very small compared to the delta.

At the same time, Dr. Visvesvaran Balasubramanian of Yashoda Hospital in Hyderabad said that there are Kovid patients in his hospital but their number is less. “Most infections are mild and are treated on an outpatient basis,” he said.
