WhatsApp : The Government of India is taking steps to stop online fraud. Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told that he is actively associated with WhatsApp to prevent fraud. The minister said on Tuesday that Meta-owned WhatsApp has agreed to deregister mobile numbers from its messaging service, which have been found to be fraudulent. Mobile service of such numbers had already been disconnected. The Telecom Minister said this when he was asked about the government’s move to stop scammers calling from so-called international numbers on WhatsApp.

Conversation continues with other messaging platforms

Some time ago many Indian WhatsApp users were getting calls from international numbers. It was a missed call, coming from initial numbers like +82 and +62. Why the calls were coming, it has not been disclosed, but experts saw it as a new scam. According to Mint’s report, now when Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav was questioned about the government’s move regarding this, he told that WhatsApp has agreed to deregister such mobile numbers. Not only this, he also said that the government is also in talks with other messaging platforms like Telegram to remove fake users.

Responding to the minister’s comment, WhatsApp said on Tuesday that the platform is in talks with the government to resolve the issue, reports Mint. We will continue to offer many in built security tools like block and report, two factor verification along with regularly conducting users security education and awareness

Government working on digital data protection law

Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that various frauds like identity theft, Fake Know Your Customer (KYC) and banking frauds can happen by misusing mobile phones. The portal has been developed to prevent such frauds. He said that India is also working on a digital personal data protection law.
