India Has More Than 800 Million Internet Users


Indian Internet Users: Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeITY), has presented statistics related to internet users in India. These figures have been presented under the second edition of the India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF). It has been revealed in the statistics that the number of users using internet in India has exceeded 800 million. It was a three-day event, which started on 9th December and went on till 11th December. The theme of the event was ‘Leveraging Teched to Empower India’. Let’s talk about this in detail.

Chandrasekhar said in a press statement at the event, “We have become the largest ‘connected’ country in the world with 800 million Indian users. 5G and BharatNet’s largest rural broadband connectivity network project will have 1.2 billion Indian users who Will constitute the largest presence in the global Internet. We expect to continue to be relevant with technological innovation as well as updated regulatory policies. Greater involvement of all stakeholders will be the third phase of this global standard cyber law framework, which we expect that will catalyze the Indian Internet and economy.

The minister also said that during India’s presidency of the G20, Prime Minister Modi had said that India would be open to assist countries in the Global South who are interested in transforming their digital economy. In this event, many stakeholders have discussed the past, present and future roadmap of the country’s digitization and internet. In this event, it has been said to bring people from civil society, academia, industry and government together. Meanwhile, MeitY Secretary Alkesh Kumar Sharma said that the government is engaged in finding ways to create a trillion-dollar digital economy in the coming years.
