Rupanshu Chaudhary/Hazaribagh. Hazaribagh is an agricultural district of Jharkhand. Two-thirds of the people of the district are dependent on agriculture. Barkagaon block of the district is known far and wide for its coal as well as jaggery. Sugarcane is cultivated on more than 125 hectares of land in Barkagaon block. Sugarcane is the most important source of income for farmers.
However, in recent years the number of these farmers has decreased due to more land being acquired for coal extraction. But, thousands of farmers are still producing sugarcane. The process of making jaggery from sugarcane starts in October-November. Especially during Makar Sankranti, the demand for jaggery from here reaches to many states. This is the reason why businessmen also come here.
Jaggery is prepared from cardamom and bay leaves
Arun, a sugarcane producing farmer, says that sugarcane is the main source of income for the farmers here. Here sowing of song starts in the month of January. The process of making jaggery from sugarcane starts after harvesting in October-November. Two types of jaggery are made here. There is a special one, in which it is prepared by adding cloves, cardamom, ginger, goliki and bay leaves.
Price 60 to 90 rupees per kg
The second is plain jaggery. The taste of both is different. Jaggery is made as per demand. Especially during the time of Makar Sankranti, traders from all over the state come here to buy jaggery. This time, in view of Makar Sankranti, the process of making jaggery has started two months in advance. Jaggery is made and stocked so that it can be made available to traders. Currently, jaggery is available in the market at Rs 60 to Rs 90 per kg.
