Bangladesh Election Latest Update Only 20 Percent Voting In 2018 80 Percent People Voted

Bangladesh Election: General elections were held in Bangladesh on Sunday (07 January) amid violence. According to Indian time, voting started at 7:30 am, which ended at 4 pm. According to the Chief Election Commissioner in the neighboring country, about 40% voting took place. The victory of the ruling Awami League is considered certain due to the boycott of the elections by the main opposition party.

Bangladesh’s largest opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) alleges that fair elections cannot be held under the leadership of Hasina. In such a situation, the opposition had demanded Sheikh Hasina to step down and elections should be held under the supervision of the caretaker government. On the other hand, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appealed to the people to vote and said that BNP is a terrorist organization. He appealed to the public to show their faith in democracy by voting. However, his appeal did not have much effect.

Western countries including America had appealed for fair elections

The United States and Western countries, major customers of Bangladesh’s garment industry, had appealed for free and fair elections. It is known that this was the 12th election in Bangladesh after independence from Pakistan in 1971. The Election Commission said that the total voting in the last election in 2018 was more than 80%. In such a situation, there has been a huge decline in voting this time. Commission Secretary Jahangir Alam said that voting was canceled at three centers due to irregularities.

BNP has boycotted the elections twice out of the last three.

The BNP, which boycotted the second of the last three elections, claimed that Hasina’s party was trying to legitimize a sham vote. According to reports, counting of votes has started in Bangladesh and Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League is moving towards a big victory. In such a situation, it is considered certain that Sheikh Hasina will once again become the Prime Minister. It is known that the results may come by noon tomorrow (Monday 8 January 2024).
