Damoh. Gujiya of Damoh of MP is popular in other districts also. Which is very soft in taste. The taste of traditional Mawa Gujiya available at Khuli Ratna Hotel in Tezgarh is still intact. This Gujiya is prepared from Pahari Khowa. This traditional sweet full of taste is liked by everyone from children to adults. Hotel owner Ratan Jain told that to prepare this Gujiya, Pahari Khowa is first heated in a pan. After this sugar is added and it is left for some time. Then the khowa is coated with coconut kernel and put in a mold to give the shape of Gujiya. This Gujiya not only enhances the taste of mouth but is also beneficial for health. People from Sagar, Jabalpur, Deori come to our shop to buy Gujiya.
He told that apart from the normal traditional dry Gujiya, we have saffron navartan, mini, sugar free, dates, chocolate, fig, rose, mango, pistachio, almond, fig, gulkand and sona gujiya. Many Bakeries also offer baked, wafer-crust gujiyas with dry fruit stuffing and even honey, but eating freshly made gujiyas is a different experience. Ratan Jain told that whether it is a Teej or a normal day, the travelers passing through this route often stop at the hotel and eat Gujiya and get it packed and taken home. The craze for this sweet is such that 10 kg of Khove Gujiya gets sold in just a few hours.
Lord Shri Krishna likes Gujiya
A round ball of flour is filled with khoya and dry fruits and then it is deep fried. This dish is called Gujiya. People believe that by making Gujhiya or Gujiya, they are pleasing Lord Krishna. However, the effect of modernity is clearly visible on food habits also. Today people have started using semolina, chocolate and paneer instead of khoya in the filling of Gujiya.
