It is very difficult to find an ideal person like Ram in Kaliyuga. Almost all women wish to have a husband like Ram, but they also have to consider that it is necessary for Ram to become Sita. Ram ji had started the practice of monogamy, he gave a quote and established the ideal of having one wife.
Ram ji had given this promise to Sita ji that “I will never think of any other woman except you.” In Valmik Ramayana Aranya Kand 18.2, Lord Rama, while rejecting the marriage proposal of Shurpanakha, says: –
“Kritdarosmi bhavati bharyeam dayita mam. Tvadvidhanaam tu narinaam sudukkha saspatnata.”
Meaning:- Goddess! I am married, this is my wife (I am bound by the vow of one wife), it would not be appropriate to keep you as a step-wife.
Ram ji respected Sita ji so much that it was mandatory for his wife to sit in the Ashwamedha Yagya and Mother Sita was in the forest at that time. He had the option to marry again but he did not. He made a golden statue of Sita ji and performed the Yagya by keeping it beside him. This is described in Valmiki Ramayana Uttar Kand 19.7-8: –
Na sitayah param bharya vane sa raghunandanh. ॥8॥
Meaning:- After completing the Yagya, Raghukulnandan King Shri Ram started living with his two sons. He did not marry any other woman except Sita. Whenever a religious wife was required in every Yagya, Shri Raghunath ji used to get a golden statue of Sita made.
Ram ji never doubted his wife. This thing is also described in Valmiki Ramayana Lanka Kand 118.20: –
Vishudha Trishu Lokeshu Maithili Janakatmaja.
Na vihatum maya shakya kirtiraatmvata yatha.
Meaning:- Sita is the most sacred of all the three worlds. Just as a man with a strong heart cannot give up his fame, in the same way I too cannot give up on him.
Ram ji’s love for Sita ji is also not hidden from anyone. According to Valmiki Ramayana Aranya Kand 10.22, Ram ji says to Mother Sita, “Sita! You are my co-wife and dearer than my life.”
Valmiki Ramayana Aranya Kand 19.16-21 When Shurpanakha ran out of anger to eat Sita, Shri Ram ordered Lakshman, Lakshman pulled out his sword and cut off Shurpanakha’s nose and ears. This makes it clear that he could not tolerate any conspiracy against his wife.
According to Ramcharitmanas (Aranya Kand), once Jayant, the foolish son of Devraj Indra, wanted to see the power of Shri Raghunathji by taking the form of a crow. Like a great retarded ant wants to fathom the ocean. That foolish, dim-witted crow (made to test the power of God) pecked at Sitaji’s feet and ran away. When the blood started flowing, Shri Raghunathji went and fixed an arrow of reed on the bow. Even Shri Raghunath ji, who was very kind and always loved the poor, was deceived by the foolish Jayant by coming to the house of that depraved person.
Inspired by the mantra, he ran the Brahma arrow. The crow got scared and ran away. He assumed his true form and went to father Indra, but knowing him to be an opponent of Shri Ramji, Indra did not keep him. Then he became disheartened, fear arose in his mind; Like sage Durvasa was afraid of Chakra. He ran around in all the worlds like Brahmalok, Shivlok etc. tired and distraught with fear and grief. No one even asked him to sit. Who can keep the traitor of Shri Ramji? For him, mother becomes like death, father like Yamraj and nectar becomes like poison.
When Naradji saw Jayant distressed, he felt pity; Because the minds of saints are very soft. After explaining it to him, he immediately sent it to Shri Ramji. He said- O benefactor of those who take refuge! Please protect me. Eager and frightened Jayant went and caught hold of Shri Ramji’s feet and said, O merciful Raghunathji! Protect, protect. I, being a dull person, could not understand your incomparable strength and your incomparable supremacy (power). Later Lord Ram forgave. But think for yourself that due to one wound of Sita ji, the Lord did not spare even Jayant (Indra’s son). It is clear from this how much he loved Mother Sita that at the slightest injury, Ram ji attached a reed arrow to his bow to fight Jayant.
According to Valmiki Ramayana Ayodhya Kand 55.15, during the exile, when Yamuna had to be crossed, Lakshman ji, as per the orders of Shri Ram, prepared a pleasant journey for Sita ji on a wooden boat (raft). Think for yourself, if Ram ji had wanted, he would have made the higher asana for himself, but he gave priority to Sita ji, hence he gave the upper asana to Sita ji.
Valmiki Ramayana Ayodhya incident 37.23 (Na Gantham Vanam Devya Sitaya Sheelvarjite. Anushtasyati Ramsya Sita Prakritmasanam.) According to this, when Lord Ram leaves for exile, Vashishtha ji says that in the absence of Ram, Sita will take over the royal crown and throne. This makes it clear that at that time women also ruled and even Ram ji did not oppose it.
All these scriptural evidences prove that Ram was an ideal husband.
