TikTok Parent Company ByteDance To Shut Down Resso In India After 31 January

The Indian government had given orders to remove China’s Resso app from Play Store and App Store. Resso app was a music streaming app of China’s Bytedance company which was launched in other countries including India in 2020. Following the government order, the company is now going to close all its operations in India from January 31. The company will give refund to those people who had subscribed to the streaming platform. For the time being, this application will work on the mobiles of those who had previously downloaded the app, but users will not be able to take a new subscription.

More than 20 crore people had downloaded it

Resso app had a good userbase in India and it was installed by more than 250 million people by May 2023. This app provided the facility of ads free music, offline music etc. to the users in exchange of paid subscription. In India, this app used to compete with Spotify, YouTube Music, Gaana, JioSaavn, Wynk and Amazon Music.

According to EY-FICCI, EY-FICCI Media and Industry report, about 208 million people streamed music online in 2022, out of which only 4 to 5 million people in the country had purchased ad-free subscription because free apps are available in the market. The report said that the paid subscriber base is expected to cross 8 million by 2025.

Bytedance is promoting this app instead of Resso

Chinese company Bytedance has already banned its Reeso app in other countries. Actually, the company is promoting TikTok Music app in place of this app and it has been launched in many countries. However, this app will not be launched in India because the government has already banned TikTok in the country and it is the publisher of TikTok music.
