Why is this beach unique?
Mahana Beach, located on the Big Island of Hawaii, is very unique because green sand is found on its shores. When people see this sand for the first time, it seems mysterious to them. Many questions start arising in their mind, the biggest of which is what is the secret of this sand being green in color. It is one of only four green sand beaches in the world.

Why is the color of sand green?
According to TOI report, the green color of the sand comes from particles of a semi-precious stone called olivine, which comes from the Cinder Cone of Pu’u Mahana, which is on the southwest crack of Mauna Loa. There is an old volcano. Due to this olivine the sand on the beach becomes green in colour.
Olivine is also known as ‘Hawaiian Diamond’. You cannot reach the beach by rented car or any other vehicle. This beach can be reached only after a walk of two and a half miles.
