Supreme Court: The Central Government on Wednesday (January 24), approving the recommendation of the Collegium, issued a notification to promote Karnataka High Court Chief Justice PB Varale as a judge in the Supreme Court. With this, there will be three Scheduled Caste judges in the Supreme Court.
In this regard, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said on social media platform The recommendation has been approved.
The number of Supreme Court judges will increase to 34.
With the appointment of Justice Varale, the number of judges in the Supreme Court will once again increase to 34. After the retirement of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul on December 25, there was a shortage of one judge in the Supreme Court.
The collegium had recommended on January 19
The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice Dhananjay Y Chandrachud had recommended the elevation of Justice Varale on January 19. The Collegium said that Justice Varale has gained a lot of experience as a judge of the Bombay High Court. After this he is also serving as the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court.
For the first time, three judges from Scheduled Caste
While recommending his name, the collegium kept in mind that among the High Court judges, he is the senior most judge belonging to the Scheduled Caste. With the elevation of Justice Varale, there will be three Scheduled Caste judges in the Supreme Court for the first time. Apart from Varale, Justice Gavai and CT Ravikumar also belong to the Scheduled Caste.
