Mahamuktimandap has been mentioned in three inscriptions (4, 8 and 29) found in Gyanvapi. ASI has described this as the most important. The ASI says the Mahamuktimandapa helps establish the existence of the famous abode of Shiva. Its description is also found in ancient texts.
Inscription 24 reveals an epithet Paramaniyakadeva. According to the survey report of ASI, 34 inscriptions have been found in Gyanvapi. Only three of these inscriptions are in good condition. Analysis of these inscriptions revealed that pilgrims visiting from the 15th to the 17th century had written something on it.
Four types of activities of pilgrims have been revealed from the inscriptions. This includes paying obeisance to the deity, making provision for lighting the lamp and lighting the Akhand lamp. From the inscriptions Aryavati, Sumbhaji, Sonaji, Mallana-Bhalu, Narayana-Bashiu, Jivantadeva, Narayanan Raman. Information about personal names like Pandita Malvidhara, Raghunath, Dodarsaiyya, Narasamna, Kasi and Kanha is available. Information about Lashumdesh and Kurhakalmandal is also available from the inscription.
Lotus medallion found on pillar, is a series of buds
A lotus medallion is present in one of the pillars of the existing structure of Gyanvapi. The pillar is decorated with a series of 18 flower buds. Apart from a lotus medallion in one of the pillars, flower buds have been found in each corner. A blooming lotus medallion and a series of 22 flower buds have been found on a pillar.
