Ladakh Demanding Statehood: After the removal of Section 370 from Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019, the Central Government divided the state into two union territories. Out of these, Ladakh was made a separate union territory and people took to the streets demanding full statehood. Women also joined the thousands of protesters who took to the streets. The temperature in Ladakh, which has minus temperature, has become very hot regarding this matter.
This massive protest was jointly led by the Apex Body of Ladakh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. If we look at the specific demands of the people coming out on the streets, the first demand is to make Ladakh a full state and the second demand is to implement the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The third demand is to make a provision for creating autonomous districts in tribal areas under the 6th Schedule. Many types of tribes live in the Union Territory of Ladakh. Due to this, its demand is also rising with full force here.
‘Demand for separate parliamentary seats’
Due to such a large number of people marching in Ladakh, the entire Ladakh remained closed. There have also been demands for implementation of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and separate parliamentary seats for Leh and Kargil districts.
A committee has already been formed under the chairmanship of the Minister of State for Home.
On the other hand, it was also announced by the Central Government that the second phase of talks will also be organized with the representatives of Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance. Despite this, this protest/bandh was called. However, the Central Government had also constituted a high level committee under the chairmanship of Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai to consider the demands of the people on this matter.
People’s demand for freedom from the endless rule of bureaucrats
The protesting people say that they cannot live under an endless rule of bureaucrats in the Union Territory. Therefore, to get rid of this, they just want full statehood. After this they will be able to elect their representatives.

Sonam Wangchuk supported the protest
Sonam Wangchuk, a teacher and environmentalist in Ladakh, has also supported the demonstration. Wangchuk last year 2023 In the month of February, there was a demand to give full statehood to Ladakh. He had claimed that in the status of a Union Territory, there is no freedom to express protest or put forward demands. Environmentalist Wangchuk Prime Minister Narendra Modi Had appealed to ensure the security of Ladakh.
