University of Birmingham Social Media Post Sikh Student Muslims Discover Islam Week

Birmingham Latest News: The University of Birmingham has apologized and removed a controversial social media post. In this post it seemed as if Sikh students were mistaken for Muslims. The university’s post said the 20th ‘Langar on Campus’ event organized by the university’s Sikh Society earlier this month was part of Islamic Awareness Week, the Birmingham Mail reported.

In a post on the university’s Instagram account, pictures of the langar were tagged with the caption ‘Discover Islam Week’. Jasveer Singh, spokesperson for the Sikh Press Association, said: “It is not only disappointing but surprising to see that those responsible for the image of the University of Birmingham are ignorant of the communities at the university.”

The association itself highlighted this mistake of the university on its social media platforms. Singh said, “This is clearly an issue of training and education being given to the university personnel. Sikhs have been an important part of the University of Birmingham community for decades.

Many people on social media described this mistake of the university as ‘shocking’ and ‘unbelievable’. A spokesperson for the university said, “The university sincerely apologizes for the hurt this (social media post) has caused to people.”

“We believe this post was in error,” he said. The mistake was discovered soon after it was posted and it was immediately removed. The University respects and is proud of the diversity of its community. He will strive to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment. We have contacted the individuals and organizations directly concerned to apologize and seek their opinion.” The first langar was organized in the university campus 20 years ago. This month was its 20th year.
