What is Social Progress Index?
Social Progress Index is a report in which the performance of all the states of the country is assessed. This assessment is done in terms of three basic human needs, better lifestyle basis and opportunities. While preparing this index, it is found out by surveying which states have nutrition and health care, water and sanitation, personal safety and living conditions.

How is the survey done in this?
In this report, 36 states and union territories and 707 districts of the country are judged on the basis of their performance on various parameters of social progress. Based on the SPI score, all the states and districts of the country are ranked under six levels of social progress. These 6 levels are very high social progress, high social progress, upper middle social progress, low middle social progress, low social progress and very low social progress.

During the survey, basic knowledge, access to information, communication, health and quality of environment are also seen in terms of standard of living of the people living in all the states. The survey measures the status of individual freedom, personal rights and choices, inclusion and access to modern education in terms of opportunity.

What is this time in the survey?
As per the report, Puducherry has the highest SIP score of 65.99 among all the states. Lakshadweep stood at the second place with a score of 65.89 and Goa is at the third place with a score of 65.89. Whereas Aizawl (Mizoram), Solan and Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) are the three best performing districts.

Know on which number your state

According to the Social Progress Index, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Goa, Sikkim, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Kerala and Jammu Kashmir have been described as better performing states than other states in terms of progress. These states have been ranked in the top 10 of the list. And the names of Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand remained at the bottom of the list.

Why Bihar is at the back, 3 points

  • According to Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh- 33.74 percent people in Bihar are below the poverty line live and if we talk about the global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), then this percentage increases to 52.5.
  • In Bihar, 42 percent children under the age of 5 are malnourished. The literacy rate of people above 15 years is 64.7%. This is also a big reason.
  • According to Professor Vikshvek of Patna University, economic life dependent on agriculture and natural calamity are also big reasons for lagging behind. People of North Bihar are troubled by floods and people of South Bihar are troubled by drought every year.

Then what is the solution?
Professor Vivek It is said that to remove the backwardness of Bihar, there is a need to work on the development of agricultural technology and infrastructure. Apart from this, there is also lack of education and awareness in the state. Effective steps are taken for all this, only then the economic backwardness of Bihar can be removed.
